September Newsletter 2008
Here we are heading towards autumn, with so many fun seasonal events and activities happening in and around Hawley during September and October. There are farmer’s markets, First Fridays and our fabulous Oktoberfest Beer Dinner happening on Friday October 3. Read on for details about this rare opportunity to experience old-school and new brews paired with delectable dishes specially selected to compliment each artisan beer.

Of course, there’s no better way to experience the region’s awesome fall foliage than to immerse yourself in it while biking along our back roads. Why not make a weekend of it here at The Inn and check out one of our region’s excellent bike routes? Meander along the lovely Lackawaxen River or wind your way past grazing cows and babbling brooks, then return to The Inn for a luxurious bath in one of our legendary Jacuzzi tubs followed by a gourmet meal prepared with healthy local ingredients.

Settlers Proprietor Jeanne Genzlinger has a few favorite bike rides that she’s happy to share with you during your stay at The Settlers Inn! Come visit and take the road to relaxation!

Get Ready to be Wowed
“It should be a great night of food and wine,” says Chef Dick Barrows of his upcoming guest appearance at The Inn’s “Burgundy Region” wine dinner on Friday, September 19. Gathering time is 7 PM; dinner begins at 7:30.

Foodies and wine enthusiasts will enjoy Barrow’s expertise as he collaborates with Settlers Executive Chef Grant Genzlinger, Chef de Cuisine Ben Sutter and Sommelier Claude Briere to guide guests through a sensory experience of the cuisine and viticulture of France’s Burgundy Region. Menu highlights include escargot ravioli with spinach hazelnut butter; seared skate wing block with caper berry butter sauce; jumbo sea scallop with wild mushroom ragout; Painted Hills beef tenderloin duck fat potato galette and spinach; and roasted pear in puff pastry with honey lavender crème anglaise.

“I look forward to cooking with Ben and Grant and hope to wow The Inn’s guests,” adds Barrows. “Many of my friends and family are coming up for the occasion.”

Barrows owns and operates Starfish Brasserie with his wife Sue. The couple met while working at Frog in Philadelphia, one of the first establishments in the city’s restaurant renaissance. They soon bought The Forager House in New Hope, operating it for 16 years to fine reviews in national press such as The New York Times and Philadelphia Inquirer. Barrows moved his family to Easton, PA, and has established Starfish Brasserie as one of the finest and most popular spots in the Lehigh Valley. Starfish has won a Best of the Valley award from Lehigh Valley Magazine in each year of its existence.

The September 19 “Burgundy Region” dinner is part of The Inn’s 2008 Wine and Food Pairing Series. Cost for the event is $100 plus tax and gratuities. Make your reservation today! Email settler@thesettlersinn.com.

Chefs and the City
Settlers Inn Proprietor and Executive Chef Grant Genzlinger and Chef de Cuisine Ben Sutter, seen here with Ben’s son Brock, brought a taste of the Pocono Mountains to Manhattan on in August as guest chefs in Macy’s Culinary Council Kitchen. “Doing a cooking demonstration at Macy’s was a wonderful opportunity for The Settlers Inn to showcase our restaurant’s cuisine,” says Grant. “We prepared foods from our region including venison, brook trout and heirloom vegetables pared with edible flowers from our garden to show the diversity of ingredients that we have at our fingertips.”
